In December of 2015, Backpacking 4 Betty raised funds for a Free Medical Clinic in cooperation with Dr. Martijn Geilen and Pema Tsal Monastic Institute. We bought medical supplies to treat over 2000 monks who attended the ceremony for peace as well as install 4 drinking water stations to be placed strategically during the 2 week event. In previous years, hundreds of monks complained of dysentery and large amounts of medicine were given to combat this. After the tanks were installed, we have had very few cases during both the 2015 and 2016 Monlam event. Sick patients, when asked where they collected their drinking water, the response was the river. This event hosted in southern Nepal highlights the need for clean drinking water and the benefits heightened awareness can provide.
